Sandhya Mulchandani, a visionary relief sculptor, has taken a remarkable journey from the realm of technology to the world of art. With an educational background in Electronic and Communication Engineering and a post-graduate diploma in Software Technology, Sandhya initially embarked on a career as an IT Professional with reputed firms in Mumbai. However, her unwavering passion for art led her to pivot from her technical career and pursue a full-time profession in the arts.
Sandhya's artistic journey began with a focus on traditional Indian art forms, such as Madhubani, Gond, Kerala Mural, Mandala, and Tanjore Mural. In 2013, she founded Tvis Arts in Bangalore, India, a nurturing haven for art enthusiasts of all ages. Through her art school, Sandhya has conducted numerous workshops, imparting her vast knowledge and skills to thousands of students and fostering a community of creativity and expression.
As she delved deeper into her artistic exploration, she discovered her true passion—Bas-relief sculpture. Captivated by the depth and form that can be conjured from a flat surface, she found immense joy in transforming clay into lifelike, three-dimensional works of art. Her contemporary interpretation of this ancient relief sculpting technique showcases her exceptional talent. Utilizing a combination of hand-building techniques, carving tools, and molds, she creates striking effects with clay on wood panels. Her works are celebrated for their intricate details and lifelike depictions of nature, reflecting her ability to bring flat surfaces to life.
In September 2023, Sandhya relocated to Australia, where she has since participated in various prestigious exhibitions, including SALA, Walkerville Art Prize, Victor Harbor Art Prize, and Brighton Jetty Sculpture. Inspired by the unique flora and fauna of Australia, these natural elements have become an integral part of her art, adding a new dimension to her work.
Her commitment to the preservation and promotion of relief sculpture remains unwavering. Recognizing that this form of art, despite its rich history and timeless appeal, is slowly fading away, Sandhya has made it her mission to ensure its survival. Through her work, she hopes to spark interest and appreciation for this traditional art form, encouraging its evolution and continued relevance in the contemporary art scene.
Sandhya's dedication to her craft and her ability to inspire others through her art make her a beacon of creativity and a custodian of artistic heritage.
